AUSTRIAN ALPINE OPEN 25

presented by salzuburgerland

Edwin Weindorfer, organizer

"After numerous DP World Tour events that we have organised in Austria and on Mallorca, the Austrian Alpine Open presented by SalzburgerLand is an absolute highlight for me as a resident of Salzburg."

HISTORY

The Austrian Open 1990 marked a significant milestone in Austrian golf, as it was the first European Tour tournament to be held on home soil. The venue was the Gut Altentann Golf Club in Henndorf am Wallersee, near Salzburg.

From October 11 to 14, 1990, the elite of European golf and numerous top US players competed against each other. After four exciting rounds, the German golf star Bernhard Langer and the US American Lanny Wadkins were tied, making a play-off necessary. Langer finally secured victory on the third play-off hole and thus the first Austrian Open.

In addition to Bernhard Langer, six other Ryder Cup players competed in Altentann in 1990, including US golf legend Jack Nicklaus, Anders Forsbrand, Jesper Parnevik and Joakim Haeggman (all SWE), Costantino Rocca (ITA)

The Golfclub Gut Altentann was designed by American golf legend Jack Nicklaus and was his first design project on the European mainland. Nicklaus personally took part in the tournament and finished in twelfth place.

The successful Austrian Open in 1990 laid the foundation for Austria's establishment as a venue for international golf tournaments. The Golfclub Gut Altentann continued to host the Austrian Golf Open in the following two years, underlining its role in European golf.
