Gut Altentann Golf Club: a masterpiece by Jack Nicklaus restored to its former glory

Gut Altentann Golf Club, located in Henndorf am Wallersee near Salzburg, is a jewel of European golf. As the first 18-hole golf course on the European mainland to be designed by golf legend Jack Nicklaus, it has been setting standards in design and playing quality since its opening in 1989.

Nicklaus, known for his philosophy that golf should be a game of precision and strategic thinking, masterfully incorporated these principles into the design of Gut Altentann. His three design criteria – precision over power, rewarding strategic thinking and minimal intervention in the natural landscape – are reflected in every fairway and green.

Between 1990 and 1992, the club hosted the Austrian Open, cementing its reputation as a first-class venue for international tournaments.

Recently, the course underwent a major redesign, taking into account the original plans by Jack Nicklaus. This redesign aimed to restore Nicklaus' original vision while meeting modern standards. A key element of this redesign was the re-arrangement of the routing, with the 18th green – the former 9th – directly in front of the clubhouse.

This modernisation has catapulted Gut Altentann Golf Club into the premier league of European golf courses. The combination of historical design and contemporary infrastructure offers golfers of all levels an incomparable experience. The harmonious integration into the picturesque landscape of the Salzburg region further adds to the appeal of this extraordinary course.

With the planned staging of the Austrian Alpine Open as part of the DP World Tour from 29 May to 1 June 2025, top international golf will return to Gut Altentann. This tournament will bring the European golfing elite to SalzburgerLand and once again put the club in the spotlight of the golfing world.

Gut Altentann Golf Club, part of the Murhof Group, embodies the perfect symbiosis of traditional design and modern excellence. For golfers seeking a challenging and aesthetically pleasing playing experience, this course is an absolute must.
